When you decide to become a freelancer is like when you jump off a skyscraper. You know where the take-off point is, but you have no idea where you might land or what dangers are coming your way. However, some of us would not trade this for the world. Is it about adrenaline? Is it about unconsciousness? Is it about challenges? Is it about selfishness? Is it about the freedom of making your own choices, no matter how bad it can turn out? Or is it just about not knowing what you are getting into? ...
When you are a freelancer, you still need to function as a team, only you need to cope with that by yourself. You are not only the CEO, the big boss, the man in control; you are, at the same time, the top management, the middle management, and the very last employee in the company, and you need to make everything work perfectly.
• As a General Manager, you have the overall responsibility for all the general functions as well as the day-to-day operations of your business.
• As a Marketing Manager, you need to understand exactly who you are and how you want other people to perceive you, as a service provider. You need to control all the tools that could ensure your awareness on the market.
• Then you’d better be a very good Sales Manager. You may have the resources, but you need to convince your clients that you are their best choice. Failure to plan, lead, control your resources means lost profit.
• Then there is the Financial Manager… you may earn more money than when you were just an employee, but you may lose as well that stability you used to have, knowing the exact payday.
• The Legal Manager has a major role in managing a business. Apart from seeking to comply with all the laws and regulations in force, you also have to pay attention to every little detail that could get you into trouble.
• You might think you do not need a Logistic Manager being a freelancer. You could not be farther from the truth. You may work on your own, but you are still involved in a supply chain, liaising with various parties.
• At least you do not have to worry too much about the HR Department. You will make a good employee that is for sure.
I hope you did not think that your roles were only managing positions. It is still you, the person who to do the hard work; you are the most important wheel that keeps the machine going.
It is really not as bad as it seems; regardless the above facts, this is the best opportunity for someone to push his limits, to test his knowledge and continuously learn and improve himself.
Freelancing is about doing your best without any time, costs, or other constraints. It is about freedom, about creativity and about enjoying every minute of your day-to-day life.
